In winter, the polar bear roams the sea ice searching for food. It can travel up to 30 Miles (50 Kms) per day. Thanks to its powerful sense of smell, it can trace its prey. It gets closer to polynyas and channels: these areas of open water in the sea ice are true oases for seals that could come to breathe without having to dig air holes.
