Around 1840, Deauville was only a small village in the marshes of the Toucques river near Trouville. However, the port was not easily accessible as it was often silted up and crowded with boats. Due to growing maritime and commercial traffic, booms were built over variable lengths in 1847. From 1862 to 1866, a floating port was also created on dry lands belonging to Deauville.
