It is a genus of nocturnal butterflies in the family Hemileucinae. They are nocturnal habits, being attracted to light. They lack oral devices as adults and do not feed (their oral system is atrophyed or absent). One of its main features is the spots on the rear wings looking like eyes, called ocelos, which warn predators that it is a dangerous, non-edible moth.
