The odonates, more commonly called dragonflies, are large insects recognizable by their elongated body formed of ten abdominal segments. They have a robust thorax equipped with two pairs of membranous wings, powerful jaws, and large faceted eyes surmounted by two short antennae. The order Odonata is made up of two suborders: the Anisoptera, or true dragonflies, and the finer and frailer Zygoptera, or damselflies.
