The municipality of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie extends at the gates of the Gorges du Verdon Regional Nature Park, of which it is a member, at the southern end of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Its 22,240-acres (9,000 ha) territory extends between the Montdenier mountain that rises to 5,741 ft (1,750 m) above sea level to the east, the Valensole plateau 2,296 to 2,624 ft (700 to 800 m) in altitude to the west, Sainte-Croix Lake 1,640 ft (500 m) above sea level to the south, and the Balène ravine to the north. The village itself sits about 1,968 ft (600 m) above sea level at the foot of limestone cliffs between the ravines of Riou and Notre-Dame.
