Donkey’s milk has been used for thousands of years. In Roman times, donkey’s milk products, drinks, and soaps were already in vogue. Pliny the Elder tells us that the beautiful and coquettish Poppea, the wife of the emperor Nero, bathed in the milk of 500 donkeys, milked every day. For the Romans, donkey’s milk was also a luxury drink. Among the Greeks, Hippocrates recommended it for all sorts of ailments: joint pain, wound healing, etc. French King François I used to take cures with this milk and considered that he owed his health more to the donkeys than to the faculty!
