In the heart of the Mazarin district

The Quatre Dauphins fountain sits in the heart of the Mazarin district built in the south of the city by the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence, Michel Mazarin, brother of the minister of Louis XIV. He imagined the district according to a checkerboard plan inspired by the Italian Renaissance and aiming to host the city's nobles. The Baroque-style fountain was sculpted in 1667 by Jean-Claude Rambot. It consists of a circular basin in cold stone from the Sainte-Baume massif, the center of which is occupied by an offset obelisk and supported by four dolphins with caudal fins carved in Calissanne stone. The metal ornamentation of the fountain listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments dates from 1912.
