The Tellure Mining Park in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines (Haut-Rhin) has built a via ferrata in the underground galleries of the former Saint-Jean Engelsbourg silver mine. It is the first of its kind in France. Over a length of 150 metres and a height of 120 metres, the climbing and potholing circuit allows you to observe the veins exploited in the 16th century. Narrow, dark passages reveal veins of silver and quartz that criss-cross the gneiss. The Saint-Jean vein was discovered in 1549 by a miner named Collin Schwartz. It was the start of a “silver fever” in the region.
