The Kuhl's Lorikeet has a hooked beak, with a membrane at the base of which the nostrils are pierced. It sometimes rubs its head or body against the branches on which it perches to encourage the opening of the keratin tube that envelops the new feathers so as to release them. This moulting is exhausting and the regrowth of feathers can be painful.
