Marc Chagall started working on the Bible in the 1930s when Ambroise Vollard entrusted him with illustrations for the sacred book. Although raised in Russian Jewish culture, Chagall found in the Bible what he considered to be the greatest source of poetry of all time. After World War Two, he dedicated himself to the creation of tapestries, ceramics, and sculptures about love and peace. However, his involvement in realizing stained-glass windows for Metz Cathedral from 1958 represented an opportunity to fulfill his spiritual desires.
