Puy de Sancy is not just a spectacular stratovolcano and the highest point of the Monts Dore and of the Massif Central. It is also on its Northern flank, at an altitude of 4,481 feet (1,366 metres), the source of the Dordogne. The river, which goes on across the Massif Central and the Aquitaine Basin and later merges with the Garonne to create the Gironde estuary, forms at the junction of two torrents: the Dore, whose source is at 5,557 feet (1,694 metres), meets the Dogne at 4,481 feet (1,366 metres) in the municipality of Mont-Dore.
