At the heart of history's repercussions

The recent discovery of numerous bones and fragments of pottery testifies to a very ancient occupation of Gorbio. However, the village was first mentioned in the convention that determined the boundaries of the County of Ventimiglia in 1002. Like the other municipalities of Menton's hinterland, it suffered between the 12th and 18th centuries from the repercussions of history and changes of borders. Ceded to the Genoese by Guido Guerra of Ventimiglia in 1157, Gorbio passed into the hands of Beatrice, Countess of Provence, a century later before returning to the Counts of Ventimiglia then to the House of Savoy. The village finally opted for its attachment to France by referendum in 1860.
