A stopover town on the Route Napoléon in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, Castellane houses a little more than 1,500 inhabitants. The municipality is located at the crossroads of the Alps and the Mediterranean, in the heart of the Haute-Provence National Geological Nature Reserve and the Verdon Regional Nature Park. Castellane and its 14th-century ramparts can be observed from the forecourt of Notre-Dame-du-Roc Chapel erected at the top of Le Roc, the steep peak that dominates the right bank of the Verdon.
