The second permanent exhibition of the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF, in Mulhouse, is entitled “Les Quais de l’Histoire”. It traces the technological evolution of the French railways. The oldest locomotive in the museum is the 111 Buddicom n°33 from 1844, which operated the Paris-Rouen route. In the steam section, the 232 U1 steam locomotive from 1949 – which could reach speeds of up to 200 km/h – is switched on every 30 minutes. This permanent animation helps to understand how the connecting rods operate in order to rotate the drive wheels and set off the train.
