The gilded copper statue of St Michael slaying the dragon is 156 metres above sea level and appears to be flying away. Michael is one of the three archangels of Christianity, along with Raphael and Gabriel. Chief of the heavenly militia, the archangel Michael is always depicted in armour, with a spear or sword in his hand. He defeats Satan (represented as a dragon) who lies at his feet. The archangel is also the weigher of souls on Judgment Day. For this reason, he may also hold a scale.
