Asymmetrical and quadrangular sails

The Explorers

In traditional navy, the sails' names derive from their shape. Auric sails - from the Latin auricus (ear) - have an asymmetrical quadrangular shape. They are attached to the mast by one of their sides, like the pinna of an ear, and have a leading edge, a border (along the boom), a leech (towards the rear), and a span (along the yard). The Don du Vent auric ketch displays horned auric sails. Their wingspan (upper side) is tied on a more or less inclined horn that leaves room for an arrow sail. The sail is hoisted together with the horn by two halyards.
