With Omaha, Utah Beach is one of the two beaches of the American landing scheduled for June 6, 1944. The Musée du Débarquement (Landing Museum) was built in 1962 by the decision of the Mayor of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Michel de Vallavieille. He wished to pay homage to the American soldiers on the very place where they set foot. Thanks to American and French subsidies, the once small museum now covers 32.291 sq ft (3,000 m²).
