A major pilgrimage site from the 8th to the 18th century, the Benedictine Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel forms one of the most remarkable examples of religious architecture of the medieval period. On an inhospitable site, its construction represented an undeniable technical and artistic feat. Some twenty halls make up the abbey: the abbey church, the cloister, the refectory, and the monks’ walkway are some of the Romanesque and Gothic masterpieces to be admired.
