As of the 13th century, the great cathedrals were richly adorned with sculpted decorations that illustrated the great cycles of Christian history. Built over more than a century between 1240 and 1365, the collegiate church of Saint-Martin in Colmar is attributed to two architects: Master Humbret (active around 1230-1240), master builder of the transept and the nave, and Guillaume de Marbourg (died in 1366) for the choir. The Unterlinden Museum is fortunate to have a collection of sculptures of saints and prophets that adorned the exterior and interior of the collegiate church.
