The volcanic ridges of the Sancy massif rise between 4,593 and 6,184 feet (1,400 and 1,885 metres) above the Dordogne valley. They are accessible to hikers who can walk around them from the Mont-Dore (3,444 feet / 1,050 metres) by going up the trails of the Grande Cascade (Big Waterfall) or the Capucin. This 10.5 miles (17 km) hike with almost 2,952 feet (900 metres) of vertical drop can be done during the day in good weather.
