The Ariane 5 launcher is one of the three components of the European manned space program. It can perform five to seven satellite launches from the Kourou base in Guyana. Its weight of 750 tons at takeoff represents 1/10th of the Eiffel Tower for a diameter of approximately 17,71 ft (5.40 m). Within two minutes after takeoff, the rocket reaches more than 4,972 mph (8,000 km/h). The side thrusters are switched on the ground, a few seconds after the Vulcain engine. They provide 90% of the 1,200 tons of thrust needed during the initial phase.
