The La Défense business district is home to the tallest and most emblematic towers in France (EDF, Total, Granite, D2, First, etc.). The architects, town planners, and landscape designers have combined the mineral nature of the buildings, forecourts and esplanades with green gardens animated by fountains and works of art. These include Alexander Calder’s “Red Spider”, Yaacov Agam’s monumental fountain, Joan Miró’s two fantastic figures and a “Thumb” by César... Classified as an international tourist zone since 2019, La Défense is symbolised by its Grande Arche designed by the Danish architect Johan-Otto Von Spreckelsen and inaugurated in July 1989.
