The volcanic ensemble of the Monts Dore must have risen to nearly 8,202 feet (2,500 meters) in altitude at the end of the Tertiary era before glacial phenomena modified its topography in the Pleistocene, particularly in its southern part occupied by the Sancy massif.It owes to volcanism the rejuvenation of its relief and its remarkable architectural complexity and petrographic variety.
