Archipelago of the Austral Islands
6
0
The seven small Austral Islands range between 357.2mi (575km) and 792.2mi (1275km) south of Tahiti, in a very distended archipelago. Only Raivavae, Rurutu, Tubuai, Rimatara and Rapa are occupied ; the other two - Marotiri to the southeast and Maria to the northwest - are deserted. Extremely isolated, the Austral Islands retain a wild character, with only 6400 inhabitants at the last census.
