Thomisus onustus cuenta con un buen sistema de ataque a sus presas, que va desde el potente veneno que inocula a sus víctimas, hasta la capacidad de cambiar de color para adaptarse a la flor o planta con la que se mimetiza.
El cambio de color que transforma a Thomisus onustus en blanca, rosa o amarilla, tarda un par de días en hacerse efectivo. Cuando adquiere su nueva tonalidad, la araña cangrejo se queda inmóvil a la espera de su botín, constituido por mariposas, moscas o abejas.
Mimetizada en las flores es prácticamente indetectable para las víctimas, y también para el fotógrafo, ya que en caso de peligro no duda en ocultarse en la parte inferior de las flores que le sirven de plataforma de caza.
