The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), 'guara roja' in spanish, is the national bird of Honduras. Most of the remaining specimens are kept in the Copán archaeological park where they are protected from poachers and smugglers for whom they represent a prime target because of their great value in the illegal wildlife trade. The Copán Maya Foundation is at the origin of awareness campaigns against poaching transmitted for generations among children in rural areas. Their high point is a ceremony called 'Parrots in freedom, reviving beauty', during which the scarlet macaws are released in the valley of Copán.
