Man is a major predator for cicadas which, however, traveled the millennia and whose fossils going back three million years have been found in the south of France. Their song is less and less heard, and their populations are in sharp decline, certain species common at the end of the 17th century, such as the Silver Cicada or the Cotton Cicada, being today relict and particularly threatened. Such a decline is linked to the development of agriculture, pollution of the land, destruction of the scrubland due to the plantations of vines or to urbanization, and repeated fires.
