Anthropogenic and climatic threats

The total population of greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) in France is estimated at around 30,000 individuals in winter and 55,000 in summer, with an average of 13,000 breeding pairs in Camargue. Relatively stable in recent years, it is threatened by the destruction or transformation of wetlands under urban and climatic pressures. The slightest disturbance - such as the passage of a helicopter at low altitude - can cause the reproductive failure of a colony of several thousand pairs, and severe climatic episodes of frost or drought can decimate entire populations.
