In the 11th century, the castle of Brégançon and its territory belonged to the powerful branch of the viscounts of Marseille. They were lieutenants of the Count of Provence and resided in the large local cities of Marseille, Arles, or Avignon. Beyond the Phocaean city and its surroundings, the viscounts of Marseille possessed many outbuildings, including the seigneury of Hyères, of which the castle of Brégançon was part.
