To anchor themselves in the mud and resist the tides, the mangroves of the Rhizophoraceae family distribute their weight over a multitude of stilt roots terminated by claws which grip the ground. Other straight and vertical aerial roots called 'ropes' start from the branches and strengthen the anchoring device.
