Turning and perforation are two ancestral techniques designed to machine pieces of wood and to remove material from them. They differ in their implementation : the perforators work vertically while the lathes - several models of which can be seen here in Robert Marichy's workshop - are horizontal ; the wood piece to perfore remains fixed and the tool turns while, in the case of turning, it is the workpiece which turns. Chronologically, the perforation of various materials dates back to the Neolithic era when the first wood lathes were built by the Egyptians in 1300 BC.
