The Amish appeared in Alsace at the end of the 17th century within the Anabaptist community. Anabaptism is one of the currents of the radical Reformation of the 16th century. It was born in Switzerland. It differs from the Lutheran and Calvinist Reformation by the refusal of infant baptism. Its followers advocate the baptism of adult believers. They also refuse to wear the sword, hold public office, and take an oath. The Anabaptists were imprisoned, in particular in Riquewihr, where they were numerous. From 1650, they settled in great numbers in the county of Ribeaupierre, where religious tolerance is recognized.
