The island of Rurutu is full of limestone caves called ana. They testify to the cataclysmic uprising that projected these former underwater caves over the sea. The bowl-shaped valley that stretches from Hauti to Toataratara Point in the south corresponds to the former lagoon that separated the island from the reef.
