An unusual landscape part of a hike

Looted of its petrified wood by collectors or locals, the Savane des Pétrifications (Savannah of Petrifications) now only attracts hikers who come to admire its desert landscape on a tropical island with usually lush vegetation. This site, classified by the Regional Nature Park of the island, constitutes one of the sections of the Trace des Caps hike, the 17.3 miles (28 km) path that runs along the southern coast of Martinique. It is accessed from the Grande Anse des Salines by taking a stony road running along Grande Terre beach. The section of the trail begins just after the car park in the undergrowth bordering Anse à Prunes. The crossing by a small wooden bridge of the Étang des Salines river marks the entrance to the savannah. Accessible to all, this hike of about two hours covers 2.4 miles (4 km) and an elevation gain of 98 ft (30 m).
