Built on the Promenade des Anglais facing the Baie des Anges in 1912 by Édouard-Jean Niermans for the Romanian Henri Négresco, the Negresco hotel is a Belle Epoque palace with neoclassical facades and an opulent almost baroque ornamentation. This mythical luxury hotel, rated five stars in 2009, has 102 rooms and 26 suites representing the most brilliant periods of French art from Louis XIII to modern art and houses 6,000 works of art. It was labeled 20th Century Heritage in 2001, then listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments in 2003, and a Living Heritage Company in 2015. Jeanne Augier, who died in January 2019, owned 97% of the Negresco, the last large independent French hotel bought by her father in 1957. With her husband Paul Augier, she made it an unusual palace, recognized worldwide. The Negresco's estimated value was 300 to 400 million euros in 2016, excluding furniture and works of art.
