On January 5, 1968, the Fort de Brégançon became by decree the official summer residence of the president of the French Republic on the initiative of Charles de Gaulle. Since then, each president has lived there in his own way. General de Gaulle, François Mitterrand, Nicolas Sarkozy, and François Hollande did not appreciate the site very much for various reasons. On the contrary, Georges Pompidou, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Jacques Chirac spent much more time there. As for current president Emmanuel Macron, he occupies the Fort de Brégançon with constancy every summer for a few days.
