For about twenty years, an ornithological counting protocol has been implemented on the Salins d'Hyères site by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur League for the Protection of Birds. Almost 228,000 individuals were tallied on their premises in 2016. In order to facilitate the counting, the site was subdivided into different entities. They were identified by alphanumeric codes and determined according to the homogeneity of their characteristics, including vegetation, hydraulic functioning, and morphological facies.
