Of medieval origin, the castle of Sedan extends over 8.64 acres (35,000 m²) and seven floors. Its construction was initiated in 1424 by Évrard II de La Marck, prince of the city. In the beginning, the castle's triangular plan encompassed a church, and twin towers served as the entrance. The fortress was later extended and reached an area of 2.5 acres (10,000 m²) in the middle of the 16th century. It was also modified and equipped to adapt to the progress of the artillery. Over the centuries, eight princes and a princess participated in making the castle of Sedan one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe.
