An omnivorous wading bird

The Common Crane (Grus grus) is omnivorous, but its diet varies according to the time of year. During the breeding season, it feeds mainly on animals (insects, molluscs, small vertebrates). Afterwards, the young and adults eat more and more plants (soft grasses, aquatic plants, berries). During migration and wintering, the crane is quite granivorous, feeding on roots, seeds and plants. In France they eat maize in the autumn, while in Spain they eat a lot of acorns from holm oaks and cork oaks.
