The church of Notre-Dame d’Epernay rises 83 metres above the town. It was built from 1898 onwards on the site of an earlier Ursuline convent. It was partially destroyed by bombing in 1918, but was quickly restored after World War I. Notre-Dame is notable for its medieval transitional style: the exterior is Romanesque and the interior is early Gothic. The restored renaissance stained-glass windows depict liturgical scenes as well as harvest scenes, proof that the wines of Champagne have always been renowned.
