Mont-Saint-Michel has not ceased to radiate since the Middle Ages. The golden statue of the Saint has sat nearly 557 ft (170 m) high since 1897. Mont-Saint-Michel resulted from the will to create an impregnable fortress and a unique place of worship. Alternately marked by wars and devotion, it entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 and again in 1998 as part of the paths to Compostela.
