The castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg has a rich historical heritage linked to two great dynasties of the Holy Roman Empire. It, therefore, represented an opportunity for Kaiser Wilhelm II to follow the path of the Hohenstaufen and the Habsburg. The renovation of the castle would involve strong political symbols, such as imperial eagles and the emperor's coats of arms. He wanted the site to be an example of the technological power developed by his country from the end of the 19th century. Running water and electricity, not yet existing in Alsace, were installed to ease the reconstruction by Bodo Ebhardt.
