An expansion thanks to donations

Founded in 1170 on the border between the bishoprics of Toulon and Fréjus, the Chartreuse de la Verne extends in the heart of the Maures Massif. It stands far from any means of communication and any habitation on the site of an old priory that succeeded a temple dedicated to Diana. Between the 12th and 18th centuries, the estate expanded thanks to donations of land in exchange for prayers. The donations, especially of meadows in Vidauban, Grimaud, or Castellane, enabled the monks to live from farming and breeding. In the 13th century, they also obtained the right to exploit salt from Hyères' salt works. Today, the access fees to the monastery of the 40,000 annual visitors contribute to its restoration and to the life of the nuns who also sell various objects (books, honey, perfumes, or religious articles) and exploit the neighboring chestnut groves.
