An exhausting task

The basket that the pickers carry on their backs using suspenders during harvest is called a bouille. The picker collects the seillées (buckets filled with grapes by the cutters) and empties his basket on the sorting table. Today, plastic bouilles have replaced wicker ones and weigh an average of 176 lbs (80 kg) when full. Even though padded leather straps protect the picker's shoulders, the work is exhausting as an individual can carry up to 6,172 lbs (2.8 tons) of grapes a day.
