An exceptional carriage

In one of the two halls of the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF in Mulhouse, a carriage decorated with an N, symbol of the Napoleonic dynasty, catches the eye. It is the car no.6 of Napoleon III’s imperial train, known as the “aides-de-camp lounge”, built in 1856 and decorated by Viollet-le-Duc. Found in a sorry state in the 1950s in Latour-de-Carol (Pyrénées-Orientales), the carriage was stored in Châlons-en-Champagne until the early 1970s. Its restoration is a model of perfection and its garnet and navy blue colours are identical to those of the original specifications.
