On average, it produces 4 to 5.28 gals (15 to 20 L) of milk every day, ten months a year, the production drying up for about two months each year. At the start of its lactation period, the Montbéliarde can provide up to 9.25 gals (35 L) per day. This breed of dairy cow has to be milked twice a day, seven days a week.
