An example of Qatar’s investment in art

The four 16.7 feet (15 metres) high steel plates of the work “East-West/West-East” by the American sculptor Richard Serra have stood in the middle of the Qatari desert since 2014. This work is one of the examples of Qatar’s massive investment in art since the 2010s, with the aim of promoting the country’s cultural and tourist image. A trend accelerated by the prospect of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to offer fans cultural activities between matches. The sculptor was invited to install his work in the desert of the Zekreet Peninsula by Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani – sister of the Emir and chairwoman of Qatar Museums –, the most powerful woman on the world art scene.
