Over time, Madine Lake has become a hunting and wildlife reserve as well as a leisure base. Along with the lake of Der, it extends in a migration corridor that attracts more than 200 waterbird species to its shores every year. Though only a fraction is sedentary more and more wintering birds stay on the lake's waters due to global warming and hotter winters. The Natura 2000 program undertakes to ensure their protection and tranquility areas have been set up, of forbidden access to the public.
