An essential stopover for cranes

The Lac du Der-Chantecoq in the Champagne region of France has become one of the main sites for the resting of Common Cranes (Grus grus) in Western Europe. As a proof, the year 2019 has beaten the world record for the concentration of Common Cranes, which dated back to 2014: 268,120 individuals were counted on the Lac du Der on 3 November. Some do not continue their migration and choose to winter around the lake. As soon as the sun begins to decline, the cranes that have left to feed in the vicinity return to the lake for the night, in noisy groups, in a very orderly V formation.
