An endangered forest now protected
North of Alençon in the Orne department, the Écouves forest covers 20,262 acres (8,200 ha) of state forest and 17,297 acres (7,000 ha) of municipal and private forests. Located within the Normandie-Maine Regional Nature Park, its biodiversity is significant. The forest almost disappeared in the 19th-century following intensive exploitation since the 13th century. Today reforested, it offers several natural habitats such as peat bogs, dry or wet moors, and ponds. Its numerous birds and varied flora make the Écouves forest a Natura 2000 protected area.
